Overview
An exclusive NEL product: a two-frequency coil. It is NEL's best-known coil, Tornado — the "golden mean" for coins, hoards and relics on historical battlefields and anywhere else — now with switchable frequencies: 7.5 and 18.75 kHz.
Switching the frequency lets you set up the metal detector for different search conditions: 7.5 kHz as an all-round setting, and the high 18.75 kHz frequency for small targets.
It is extremely light for its size, only 570 g, and with such a moderate load you can search all day. With a slow sweep it responds very well to large and medium targets, as well as small ones — under 1 g. Recommended as a replacement for the stock coil.

Important for Minelab X-Terra
How do I set the ground balance?
Use automatic ground balance. On X-Terra 50, 54, 505, 30, 34 and 305 you can also use manual ground balance. If the detector will not balance, reduce the sensitivity by 50%.
Which Noise Cancel setting should I use?
- Set it to 0 by default.
- For the longest reach on a large copper coin in air, set it to +1. This may cause false signals from the ground.
- To minimise the response to hot rocks or heavily mineralised ground, set it to −1 or −2. Change the value until the detector stops reacting to such ground.
What sensitivity should I set with a large NEL coil?
Start at the starting value and raise it by one every 0.5–1 hour of detecting until you are used to the coil.
| X-Terra series | Starting value | Sites with interference (e.g. grass) | Sites without interference (e.g. ploughed field) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70, 74, 705 | 19 | 25–27 | 27–30 |
| 50, 54, 505 | 14 | 17–18 | 19–20 |
| 30, 34, 305 | 6 | 7–8 | 9–10 |
How do I switch the frequency?
Switch the detector off and on again within 2 seconds: the coil moves to the next frequency. If more than 2 seconds pass between off and on, the frequency stays the same, as the coil remembers the last frequency selected.
- Where it works best
- Everyday searching for coins, hoards and relics in fields, tree belts and on historical battlefields, with one coil for different conditions: switch the frequency instead of changing coils.
- Recommended for
- Beginners and experienced detectorists.
Features
The coil is fully waterproof and submersible. The body is filled with epoxy resin and finished with a black marine-grade coating, the kind used on yachts and boats, so it can be used without a plastic coil cover. It handles medium and high ground mineralization well.

Cable strain relief
Protects the cable from kinking and also provides complete waterproofing.

Robust mounting bracket
Holds the coil firmly on the stem.

Outer shell
Made of impact-resistant, UV-resistant plastic.

Coil cover
Protects the search coil from damage and chipping.

Wear-resistant coating
Made of composite materials, so the coil can safely be used without a cover if required.

Rubber rings
For a firmer fit of the coil on the lower stem.

Connector
Gold- or silver-plated contacts.

High-strength cable
With a larger conductor cross-section. Made in Germany.

Protective cap
Protects the connector from dirt and dust.

Fixing bolt and hook-and-loop strap
Supplied with the coil.
Every NEL coil is field-tested for detection depth before sale.
